Yu Zhao

Bridging Consulting was honored to participate in the Octane OC Medical Innovation Forum 2024, where our founder, Yu Zhao, joined an esteemed panel at the AI & Innovation Summit to discuss the ethical dimensions of AI adoption in healthcare.

Moderated by Shawn Collins, Partner at Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth LLP, the panel brought together thought leaders including Sam King, FHFMA, FHIMSS, and Sharief Taraman, MD, DABPN, DABPM, FAAP, CEO of Cognoa, to explore critical issues such as bias, privacy, transparency, and regulatory frameworks in AI-driven healthcare.

Key insights from the panel discussion included:

  • Bias in AI: Dr. Taraman emphasized that bias reflects systemic healthcare issues and highlighted the need for intentional data sourcing and diverse validation sets. Yu Zhao underscored how underrepresented data can skew AI outcomes, calling for rigorous validation processes.

  • Transparency and Accountability: Panelists advocated for AI “nutrition labels” to outline model training processes and limitations, with Zhao noting the FDA’s early exploration of responsible AI labeling.

  • Accessibility: The group debated AI’s potential to democratize healthcare versus risks of exacerbating disparities, particularly when tools are tied to specific devices.

The two-day summit also showcased dozens of innovative startups, including several AI-focused companies from Southern California and beyond, solidifying Octane OC’s role as a hub for healthcare innovation and collaboration.

Bridging Consulting extends gratitude to Octane OC, the organizers, and fellow panelists for a thought-provoking event that continues to shape the future of AI in healthcare.
